About the talk:
The British Empire was the biggest empire in history, ever. But instead of the culture wars which it dominates, we need conversations. And to have great conversations we need to know our own stories and how it fits into the bigger picture.
Award winning author Shelina Janmohamed talks about the importance of owning your own narrative, the power of storytelling and how we need to start writing our own future history, and helping our children to do so. Drawing on her recently published book “Story of Now: Let’s Talk About The British Empire” she weaves a powerful case for starting conversation about who we are now, by drawing on the backdrop of the British Empire and how it has shaped us all. There is no greater power than to know your own story and to be able to tell it, and there is no greater gift that we can give ourselves and our children than to know who we are.
Shelina will prompt children and adults alike to think differently about the world around us and how we can shape it. And for those who bring a copy of Story of Now, there will be a signing at the end.

Shelina Janmohamed is the bestselling author of Love in a Headscarf, a memoir about growing up as a British Muslim woman. Her book, Generation M: Young Muslims Changing the World​, is an exploration of rising group of global Muslims who believe that faith and modernity go hand in hand, and they are going to have a disproportionate influence on our future world. Shelina’s debut children’s book, The Extraordinary Life of Serena Williams, tells the story of an incredible tennis champion who battled many things, from life-threatening illnesses and sports injuries, to sexism and racism in the tennis world.
She has recently published her newest book entitled “Story of now: why we need to talk about the British Empire”, which she will be speaking about.
She is an established commentator on Muslim social and religious trends, particularly around young Muslims and Muslim women, and writes for Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the National and the BBC.
Shelina is also the Vice President of Ogilvy Islamic Marketing, the world’s first bespoke global Islamic branding practice for building brands with Muslim audiences, she was named one of the world’s 500 most influential Muslims, and specifically one of the UK’s 100 most powerful Muslim women. The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising named her as one of the ‘Future Female Leaders of British Advertising’.
