Join us as we welcome Adam Ramadhan as he delivers a talk entitled “When Legal Theory Meets Identity”.
When faced with a tradition (ḥadīth) that is weak from the perspective of its chain, Imāmī scholars would not necessarily drop it from consideration. Some scholars advocate employing certain mechnisms which can be used to circumvent the tradition’s weakness and justify using it in juristic inference (fiqh). This talk examines one such mechanism, known as ‘the
principle of rehabilitation’ (qāʿidat al-injibār), and uses it to make a point about the nature of Imāmī legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh) more broadly.

Adam Ramadhan is the Head Librarian and Education Manager at the Al-Mahdi Institute. He holds a BA (Hons) in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Leeds, studied at the Al-Mahdi Institute for several years, and recently completed an MSt in Islamic Studies and History at the University of Oxford. His current research interests revolve around Imāmī legal
theory. He also maintains an interest in the social and intellectual history of Bahrain.
